Happy New Year Everyone!

Welcome back and let’s hit the ground running with only a few weeks left in the semester.

First priority is your “B or better” on track status. Then it is our alumni homecoming event Thursday where seniors can meet with our graduates and discuss all things “Post Schurz.”

PSAT Scores and Other Exciting News!

December12

Greetings and Salutations AVID Students! I was remiss in getting this out yesterday, but here we are so let’s take a look at your week:

AVID 12 – College applications, scholarship searches and DOG reports highlight your week. Your scholarship search activity is due identifying 3 applications you will submit to try to cover some out-of-pocket college expenses. In addition we are reviewing your college applications and finalizing match schools. You should have a blog and a DOG reflection in the works.

AVID 9 – It’s poetry and PSAT scores this week! We will be diving into your PSAT scores to figure out what they mean, and setting up a plan to raise your score by April. Also, we will reflect on our DOG reports and this will be a requirement every time you receive one. These will be placed in your AVID binder (in the AVID section) with all of your DOG reports.

As Bugs Bunny says, “That’s all, folks.” Have a great week!

Happy December!

December5

So here we are in the first full week of December.

AVID 12 – Seniors, you are finishing college apps and we are undertaking a series of activities designed to get you used to the time and thought that should go into a blog post each week. We are using the Iceberg Illusion to document our senior journeys on the surface and below the surface as shown in Sylvia Duckworth’s illustration and a blog post on the real truth about success.

AVID 9 – Freshmen, we are continuing to complete our transferable and self management skills of our personal parachutes. In addition, we have taken a personality test to determine what our dominant style is – Helper, Thinker, Organizer, or Collaborator. We have taken a direct approach to getting our agendas in use and begin each class with a homework reminder. Thursday, you will be taking stock of how you have done so far. Finally, Friday, we will revisit College Greenlight, our second site to Raise.Me that will help us locate scholarship dollars.

Have a great week!

We’re Baaaccck!

November26

Greetings Everyone!

I hope you had a fantastic break filled with family, friends, and food. I know I sure did! (I think I am still stuffed from the turkey.) So, let’s take a look at how we will get back into the swing of things as we turn toward December:

Seniors – AVID 12 – We are beginning the home stretch for college applications and required ILP tasks that we can get done. That means your 3 match, and 1 safety should be heading to the finish. Also, your Brag Sheet, personal statement & FAFSA should be completed.  Don’t forget to update your Naviance accounts as you add applications and request transcripts or recommendations. We are also beginning our mini-unit on research provided by Google Ed. to help us be ready for our required research project this year. Say it with me now, 1-2-3…”Yay!”

Freshmen – AVID 9 – First and foremost, we are taking a more direct approach to using our binders and agendas with daily time at the start of class for homework input, and weekly binder checks. We are continuing our Parachute project by finishing our skill work to identify our transferable and internal skills. Then, before we break for the new year, we will read and learn about mandalas and create our own with a reflective essay. Finally, we are continuing our tutorials with a focus on choosing the right subjects and questions and how to write high level reflections.
